At Sonnenhof, sustainability and regionality are at the centre of everything we do. We are aware of our responsibility towards the environment and focus on measures that help to preserve and protect our natural surroundings.
Energy from renewable sources
Back in 2005, we converted the Sonnenhof from an oil-fired heating system to a wood chip heating system, which is fuelled by biomass from our forest and surrounding woods. This decision enables us to use wood from regional sources with short delivery routes, which significantly reduces our ecological footprint. Every year, we use around 200 megawatt hours for heating and hot water, which is the equivalent of around 20,000 litres of heating oil. This saves us around 53,000 kg of CO₂ per year – equivalent to the amount of CO₂ that a car would emit over 375,000 kilometres, i.e. almost ten trips around the world.
We have also been using solar energy since 2010. Our photovoltaic system with an output of 19.5 kilowatt peaks produces around 24,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, all of which is utilised in operation. This saves a further 10,080 kg of CO₂ per year – equivalent to the amount of CO₂ that would have been caused by around 500,000 smartphone charges. The surplus electricity is fed into the local grid, allowing us to make an active contribution to promoting clean energy in the region.
Regionality and local cooperation
We are proud to source predominantly local and regional products. This means not only fresh and high-quality food, but also supporting local agriculture and the local economy. Our guests enjoy authentic and sustainable dishes that reflect the flavours and traditions of South Tyrol.
Most of the vegetables for our kitchen come from farmers in the neighbouring villages. We source meat and sausages from our butcher around the corner, and the fresh bread is supplied by artisan bakers from the region.
Since 2023, our guests have also been able to experience a special treat: naturally cloudy mountain apple juice, made by our son Johannes. The apples come from our own orchards and are carefully processed to produce a delicious, natural juice.
Our commitment to the future
Sustainability is not a one-off project for us, but an ongoing commitment. We are constantly setting ourselves new goals to minimise our ecological footprint while offering our guests an authentic and environmentally conscious experience.
We look forward to continuing this journey with you and making the Sonnenhof a sustainable place for future generations and guests.
