Since 2005 we have heated with wood chips instead of heating oil. Since 2010 a photovoltaic system on our roof has supplied electricity. We buy most of our vegetables, meat and bread from businesses in the area.
Heating and electricity
In 2005 we replaced our oil heating with a wood chip heating system. The wood comes from our own forest and from woods nearby. For heating and hot water we need around 200 megawatt hours of heat a year. With heating oil, that would be about 20,000 litres.
The photovoltaic system on the roof has 19.5 kilowatt peak and produces around 24,000 kilowatt hours of electricity a year.
Buying from businesses in the area
Most of the vegetables for our kitchen come from farmers in the neighbouring villages. We get meat and sausages from the butcher around the corner, and the bread is baked by bakers from the region.
That way the orders stay with businesses here in the area.
Since 2023 we have also served naturally cloudy mountain apple juice made by our son Johannes. The apples come from our own orchards and are gently pressed into juice.
